The pages of these inexpensive paper-over-board reissues look browned with age, giving the books an antique-y patina. Otherwise, Bridwell's stories about Emily Elizabeth and her oversized red pup, instantly recognizable in the author/artist's two-color illustrations, are unchanged. Review covers these books: Clifford the Big Red Dog, Clifford the Small Red Puppy, and Clifford's Good Deeds.

This fiftieth-anniversary compilation contains six early Clifford the Big Red Dog stories, including the original tale from 1963. Young Emily Elizabeth narrates each story, describing her unusual dog and the jobs, trips, good deeds, or tricks he can do. The collection also includes an introduction by Bridwell and some biographical and historical information about the author and the inspiration for his books.

Clifford competes in the "America's Super Dog Contest." Head-to-head with small and agile pup Champ, Clifford looks like a buffoon. However, he aces the final test: making a big splash in the pond. The bland story is illustrated with standard-issue drawings of the big red dog and friends.

Clifford the big red dog and his owner Emily Elizabeth introduce a variety of topics including weather, space, and mail delivery. The information is simple and Clifford is an unnecessary inclusion, but the topics will be of interest to very young children. Bridwell's cartoon-style art is more cute than informative, but the facts are solid and will lead children on to more detailed resources.
